Dental bonding is a term used to describe that phase of esthetic dentistry that allows the dentist to bond (or glue) filling material (composite, porcelain, amalgam) to teeth. In the past, fillings were held in the teeth by the shape of the tooth preparation, or with pins. This usually required considerable removal of sound tooth structure, in addition to decay, in order to retain the filling material properly. Now, with the new generation of dental bonding materials, it is possible to place a very esthetic restoration in a decayed or broken tooth with minimum or no loss of additional tooth structure.

Composite:

This is a putty-like filling material that comes in shades (colors) to match the different shades of natural teeth. This material can be sculpted and bonded to the teeth to restore tooth loss due to decay or fracture. If the decay or fracture is not too extensive this will provide a very strong and esthetic restoration that can last several years.

Porcelain:

We can now bond porcelain, which is very strong and esthetic, to teeth in the form of inlays, onlays, crowns and laminates. This, also, results in a beautiful, life-like tooth restoration that will last many years.

Amalgam:

This is the typical “silver” filling material that most people are familiar with. Although we now have much more esthetic materials (composite, porcelain), silver amalgam is still a very strong and economic choice for restoring teeth damaged by decay or fracture. Amalgam can now be bonded to the remaining tooth structure to increase its strength and increase the longevity of the restoration.
