Dental bonding is a term used to describe
that phase of esthetic dentistry that allows
the dentist to bond (or glue) filling
material (composite, porcelain, amalgam)
to teeth. In the past, fillings were held
in the teeth by the shape of the tooth preparation,
or with pins. This usually required considerable
removal of sound tooth structure, in addition
to decay, in order to retain the filling
material properly. Now, with the new generation
of dental bonding materials, it is possible to
place a very esthetic restoration in a decayed
or broken tooth with minimum or no loss of additional
tooth structure.
