Life’s simple pleasures can cause problems and pain for the millions of adults who suffer from permanent tooth loss. Until now, the usual way to replace missing teeth was with fixed / removable bridgework or dentures. Although these methods are adequate and acceptable in most cases, we now have a more natural, life-like solution to this problem, dental implants. A dental implant is a surgically inserted metal device which takes the place of the missing tooth root and forms a very solid anchor upon which replacement teeth or dentures may be secured. People of all ages are turning to dental implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth or a full set of dentures. Experts predict that the demand for the procedure will continue to grow as people become more familiar with the benefits of dental implants.

What are some common uses for dental implants?

  1. Replace a single tooth: One implant with a crown can replace a single missing tooth, eliminating the need to prepare adjacent, natural teeth.

  2. Eliminate a partial denture: Implants can be used as support for a fixed bridge by either connecting to natural teeth or to other implants.

  3. Stabilize a denture: A removable denture can be retained by several implants while still being supported by tissue.

  4. Retain and support a denture: A removable denture can be retained and supported by four to six implants joined by a bar.

  5. Support a complete bridge: Jaws missing all the teeth can be restored with fixed bridges anchored by six implants.

Age is not a deterrent to receiving a dental implant. Most patients who are healthy enough for typical dental procedures may receive implants. The main limitation is the amount of available bone which can be determined by a clinical examination and x-rays.

Though dental implants are a relatively simple procedure and may cause only minor discomfort when placed, they generally warrant the expertise of two dental professionals, an oral surgeon and a general dentist. Working as a team, they can determine if you are a candidate for dental implants and design an appropriate treatment plan. The implants are then placed in the jaw by the oral surgeon and, after a period of bone integration (usually four to six months), the general dentist will fabricate the replacement teeth.

Dental implants are changing the way people live. With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.
