More commonly known as bleaching, this process provides a
safe and effective
method of removing internal and external stains from teeth. Significant
whitening
usually occurs in days.
Why do teeth discolor?
- Generally, teeth darken naturally with age.
- Some teeth are naturally too pigmented or stained as
they develop.
- Exposure to coffee, tea, juices, soda or tobacco
darkens teeth.
- Discoloration sometimes happens from minerals in diet
or water
- Discoloration sometimes happens from antibiotics
(tetracycline)
- An excess of fluoride taken internally during tooth
development.
- Old fillings, tooth nerve damage or trauma can also
account for darkening.
What is the treatment procedure?
- An impression (mould) of your teeth will be
taken
- We fabricate a thin, soft plastic trays that fit over
your teeth, comfortably.
- We will dispense the appropriate amount and
concentration of bleaching solution.
- We will give instructions on how to use the bleach
and for how long.
Some difficult darker stains may naturally require a
higher concentration of bleach
or longer treatment time. Normally, the bleaching trays are worn during
sleep.
History and research show that 90-95% of patients treated experienced
some
level of whitening. Existing porcelain restorations and white fillings do
not whiten
with bleaching.
Are there any "side effects"?
- Some patients experience increased tooth sensitivity
to cold
- Some patients experience a slight redness of the gums
near the teeth.
- These symptoms will disappear in 1-3 days after
interruption or
completion of the treatment.
How long does it last?
Research and experience show that the whitening effect
from the bleaching
procedure lasts for years. Teeth may darken faster if exposed again to
staining
products such as tobacco, coffee or juices. Whiteness can be maintained
indefinitely with periodic, one-night bleaching and regular professional
cleaning.
